Relatively high-tech in the rest of my life, in art, I am drawn to older techniques hand-carved wood blocks for printing, manual quilting, individually set lines of lead text printed on a decidedly middle of the last century letterpress. The limits of these processes and their time-consuming natures cause me to slow, to look more closely at the images around me and the images in front of me. And they make me appreciate the benefits and appropriate uses of modern technologies.
When I am looking for images to print, a number of themes recur: cityscapes (especially DC row houses), Caribbean themes, my dog Ginger and the combination of text and images. As a quilter, I take an evolving, improvisational approach, using primarily found and donated materials. In life and in art, I am drawn to the intersection of fields, ideas and techniques. Prints are available through gallery plan b here in DC.
Along with Monica Hand and Frederick Nunley, I founded 7 hands press, which produces limited-edition, handmade books in Washington DC. Our first book, Seven Seasons of Separation and Loss, appeared in late 2002.
Under the name of Ginger Studios, I have begun to produce and sell note cards produced in my home studio on a small, decidely middle of the last century letterpress.
